“We’d like,” I said, sitting down, “to talk about a little break-in. At the Pat-A-Cake Bakery.”

“How thrilling!” Mr. Crinkles croaked. “A mystery. And why do you think I can help you?”

“Because you were seen,” I said, “and we have some interesting evidence.”

“More and more intriguing,” Crinkles said. “What evidence?”

“Stolen recipes.”

Mr. Crinkles sat back, his face disappearing into darkness.

Lots for the old geezer to digest. Man, I’m good!

“Well,” Crinkles stated, “I seem to be holding a losing hand.”

His face came back to freeze us with an icy scowl. “But, I never lose, gentlemen.

“Mr. Fum,” Crinkles said into an intercom.

A door opened behind Mr. Crinkles.

The door closed.

“Mr. Fum helps me out,” Crinkles stated, “from time to time.”

Mr. Crinkles pressed another button, and large curtains opened along the walls.

The light from a dozen windows revealed a towering, lumpy, gurgling ogre.

Its face was rotting wart-flesh.

Foul green snot oozed over cracked teeth.

Crinkles wheezed, “Gentlemen. Meet Mr. Fum.”
